Embracing Equity in Law and Entrepreneurship

On March 9, students from the L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic visited Balmoral Hall School to talk to students about business law fundamentals and entrepreneurship. This was the Clinic’s third return to Balmoral Hall since the rise of the pandemic.

Black Law Students Association invites undergrads to “see yourself here” at Robson Hall
March 8, 2023 —
As she wandered through University Centre one day, early in her first-year of law school, Meseret Alem noticed the diverse student population around her. She asked herself, “If there’s so many Black students in other parts of campus, why isn’t there a similar concentration among law students at Robson Hall?” Very soon after that, together with fellow law students, she resurrected the Manitoba chapter of the Black Law Students’ Association of Canada, became its Co-President, and has been working to organize “See Yourself Here,” a recruiting event for Black students considering careers in law.

Reclaiming Anishinaabe Law

The publication of a first book is a rite of passage for many academics but making it accessible to the general public is a very generous and sincere way to share knowledge. Dr. Leo Baskatawang will meet that milestone of his academic career when the University of Manitoba Press releases his book Reclaiming Anishinaabe Law: Kinamaadiwin Inaakonigewin and the Treaty Right to Education on March 31, 2023.

Moot Report 2023: Capturing the Spirit of the Laskin

The University of Manitoba’s 2023 Laskin Moot team proudly took home the Spirit of the Laskin Award, and finished in the Top 6 for their factum after competing in the annual bilingual competition held February 23, 24, and 25 at Dalhousie University in Halifax.

Moot Report 2023: Success at Canadian National Negotiation Competition
March 3, 2023 —
Three University of Manitoba Faculty of Law teams from Robson Hall put in extremely strong performances at the seventh annual Canadian National Negotiation Competition (CNNC). The team of Chris Dick and Kennedy Pinette won second place in the inaugural French stream of the competition, an accomplishment that is all the more significant given the fact that four out of the six teams participating in French were from Québec. In the English stream, Ramsay Hall and Samantha Harvey placed third, and Benjamin Leahy and Jodi Plenert also performed at an extremely high level in a very talented field of 18 teams. This year, the CNNC was held at McGill University, Faculty of Law in Montreal on February 24 and 25, 2023.

CanU: The Next Generation – of lawyers

Each year, since at least 2017, law students at Robson Hall have run a CanU law school program for Winnipeg High School students. CanU is a Winnipeg-based charitable organization that coordinates programs designed and led by post-secondary student volunteers. Law students Xiyuan Feng and Mursal Ismael are running the program this year and will be promoting it at CanU’s Family Festival taking place on Thursday, March 9, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the University of Manitoba’s University Centre Multipurpose room.

Faculty of Law proud to host Canadian Division of Jessup International Moot

This year marks the 50th anniversary since Canadian law schools first started hosting the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition’s annual Canadian Division Qualifying Tournament in 1973. The University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law has the distinctive honour of hosting this Canadian leg of the world’s largest moot court competition over the weekend of February 23 to 25, 2023 at The Fairmont Winnipeg Hotel.
