Manitoba Law Students’ Association and Faculty of Law sign agreement for critical change

April 14, 2023 — 
The Faculty of Law recently announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Manitoba Law Students’ Association MLSA to accomplish two very needed areas of change. Commencing immediately, the Faculty and student group will fund two articling student positions especially for those graduating students facing challenges related to equity, diversity and inclusion. Also commencing right after exams, will be much-needed renovations to student spaces in Robson Hall, including gender-neutral washrooms and expanded study spaces.

Moot Report 2023: More than words, Kawaskimhon offers real-world practice of collaborative principles

April 11, 2023 — 
University of Manitoba law students travelled to the University of Victoria to take part in the 2023 Kawaskimhon Moot held March 10 – 11. Third-year students Adam Kowal, Brayden Gray, Heather Alexander, and Carleena Cavallo were coached by Assistant Professor Daniel Diamond, and Indigenous Legal Studies Coordinator Marc Kruse [JD/2015]. The students returned with profound learning experiences from having had the opportunity to put the collaborative principles of the Indigenous moot into practice.

The Faculty of Law was honoured to recognize the hard work, diligence and achievements of its community members at an annual reception held Tuesday, April 4, 2023. Many distinguished members of Manitoba’s legal community, including judges, law firm partners, practicing professional instructors, professors and staff of the province’s keystone legal organizations were in attendance, many of whom are also alumni.

The Faculty of law is pleased to announce that Natasha Brown [BEd/2001; LLB/2005], former Manitoba Access to Justice Coordinator at the Law Society of Manitoba, will be joining the Faculty of Law as the Director of Access to Justice and Community Engagement on a three-year term.

Dr. Nathan Derejko and the Attack of the Peacekeepers

Unexpected guests tuned in to a hybrid online/in-person public lecture given as one of St. Paul’s College Brown Bag lectures on March 3, 2023. Dr. Nathan Derejko, Mauro Chair in Human Rights and Social Justice, and Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law was presenting his research on the use of force and right to life during so-called ‘robust’ peacekeeping missions, when somewhat unexpectedly, current members of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), tuned in online from their mission headquarters.

Inaugural Art Braid Business Law Case Competition impacts clinical learning

March 30, 2023 — 
Edwin Arthur Braid, Q.C. (1934 – 2020), or ‘Art’, the much-loved former Dean and Professor at Robson Hall, the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law, had many passions. He was well known for his kindness, his commitment to intellectual discourse, and his precision and clarity as a teacher, among other things. In addition to the multitude of positive attributes associated with him, Art Braid was known for his affinity for business law. The inaugural Art Braid Business Law Case Competition took place on Friday, March 17, 2023. The competition was hosted at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP’s downtown offices in True North Square.

A Brilliant Friend: The Legacy of Butch Nepon

March 24, 2023 — 
Once upon a time there was a law professor who was beloved by students, colleagues and Faculty of Law alumni alike. His name was Matthew Bernard Nepon, and he was a graduate of the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law, class of 1967. Everyone called him “Butch.” He never had children, but for the past two decades, law students at his alma mater have continued to benefit from his legacy, whether they knew it or not. Now that family members who remember their ‘Uncle Butch’ are getting older, they thought it important to share the story of the extraordinary man behind the Butch Nepon Memorial Bursary.

Moot Report 2023: Top-ranking Manitoba Bastarache team makes impact in French language moot

March 24, 2023 — 
The University of Manitoba Faculty of Law team competing at the Concours de Plaidoirie Michel-Bastarache at the University of Ottawa, March 17 – 19, 2023, earned much praise from judges and organizers when they took second-best pair overall and second and third-best oralists, especially since French is not the first language of any of the team members.

Moot Report 2023: Success for Robson Hall at the Donald G. H. Bowman National Tax Moot – Best Appellant Factum

March 10, 2023 — 
Over the weekend of March 3-4, 2023, the University of Manitoba participated in the Donald G. H. Bowman National Tax Moot. The colours of Robson Hall were carried by Brandon Gray (3L), and Sawarn Benning (2L), Matthew London (2L) and Justin Papoff (2L) as oralists, with support from Ben Maness (3L) as the researcher. Coaches Professor Darcy MacPherson and David Silver (Department of Justice, Canada) were very pleased and proud of the team’s performance. The team was rewarded with the prize for Best Appellant Factum.
