University of Manitoba Community Law Centre Launches Prison Law Clinic
June 27, 2024 —
Upon identifying a gap in legal services for individuals held in custody in federal prisons, the University of Manitoba Community Law Centre (UMCLC) has taken steps to address this issue by launching the province’s first Prison Law Clinic.

Moot Report 2024: A season of excellence
April 23, 2024 —
The 2024 Moot season held another year of excellent learning opportunities for law students and resulted in several triumphs for the Manitoba moot teams. Awards won included the Spirit of the Laskin Award, the Spirit of Negotiation Award for the French stream of the Canadian National Negotiation Competition (CNNC), and recognition for the fourth-best mooter in the all-French language Bastarache moot.

Learning about Arts and Business Law needs of Northern Manitobans

From March 24-27, law students from the Manitoba Legal Clinic for the Arts and L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic attended the second annual Northern Arts & Food Workshop hosted at University College of the North in The Pas. While in The Pas students stayed on the Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN) at Kikiwak Inn. Learn about OCN and inspiring plans for the Opaskwayak community.

UM Law Rights Clinic students support Public Interest lawyer at Supreme Court hearing

Rights Clinic law students at Robson Hall had the opportunity to help in a very real way with a Supreme Court of Canada appeal that could influence access to justice for Canadians receiving social assistance.

Call to Celebrate: Indigenous Business Excellence

On November 16, 2023, law students from the L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic attended the 17th annual Visionary Indigenous Business Excellence (VIBE) Awards, hosted by the Asper School of Business Indigenous Business Education Partners (IBEP) at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg. Each year this event celebrates the achievements of Indigenous businesses in Manitoba.

Faculty of Law alum L. Kerry Vickar [LLB/1980] got to witness a return on his investment in-person on September 26 when he visited and officially opened the L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic. The gift he had given to the Faculty of Law had transformed a dingy basement storage room into a state-of-the-art experiential learning clinical space for law students to learn hands-on, the practice of business law.

Getting ready to help Northern communities

On August 22 and 23, law students from the L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic attended the 51st Northern Association of Community Councils (NACC) Annual General Assembly and Trade Show at Canad Inns Destination Centre Polo Park in Winnipeg. The NACC Annual General Assembly welcomed representatives from Northern Manitoba communities and others who support providing accessible services and resources to people living in Northern Manitoba.

UM gets more than $400,000 to double seats in clinical psychology program
