Physicists suggest Neutron stars should be bigger than they are

April 30, 2021 — 
UM physicists Drs. Juliette Mammei and Micheal Gerricke are part of an international research experiment that has made the most precise measurement yet of the neutron distribution in a heavy nucleus, with implications for the structure of neutron stars. Their paper, Accurate Determination of the Neutron Skin Thickness of 208Pb through Parity-Violation in Electron Scattering has just been published in the Physical Review Letters.

The Faculty of Science is thrilled to announce that Dr. Jayanne English, Department of Physics and Astronomy, at the University of Manitoba has been selected by the Canadian Astronomical Society (CASCA) for the 2021 Qilak Award. The Qilak Award for Astronomy Outreach and Communication recognizes individual Canadian residents, or teams of residents, who have made an outstanding contribution either to the public understanding and appreciation of astronomy in Canada or to informal astronomy education in Canada.

Wouter Deconinck recipient of the 2021 UM Sustainability Award

Wouter Deconinck, Associate Professor of Physics, is the recipient of the 2021 UM Sustainability Award. The award recognizes exceptional and continuous integration of sustainability into teaching, research and engagement activities. Deconinck began teaching at UM less than two years ago, and already he has introduced unique course and program offerings that have engaged students and benefited our campus community.

UM Science students win big at Aquahacking Lake Winnipeg Challenge

The Faculty of Science students won second place and $15,000 in the 2020 Lake Winnipeg Aquahacking Challenge, hosted by the International Institute for Sustainable Development in partnership with Aqua Forum, a Montreal-based organization.

International award-winning cosmic image

October 7, 2020 — 
Dr. Jayanne English, an expert in astronomy image-making in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, at the University of Manitoba won 2nd place in the prestigious National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) cosmic image contest for her latest cosmic image, a composite VLA and Hubble Space Telescope image revealing the extended magnetic field of the galaxy NGC 5775. Named: Magnetic Field of Galaxy NGC 5775.
