From a fundamental discovery in a chemistry lab to a novel product for the market

It all started when John Sorensen, a chemistry professor, and his research team discovered an enzyme with an interesting reaction, a difficult step in the organic synthesis laboratory. The reaction normally requires multiple steps and many reagents without the same yields. But with the enzyme, it could be done in a single step in great condition. The discovery then sparked conversations about commercialization among the research team and how it could be put somewhere on a store shelf.

Science Spark 3K Pitch Competition 2024 presented by the Bioscience Association Manitoba (BAM) is happening on April 8th, 1:00 p.m. at Marshall McLuhan Hall as 9 teams of science students pitch their innovative ideas and compete for a chance to win a $3,000 cash prize! The event is free but registration is required.

Creating the most remarkable event of the year for Winnipeggers to rendezvous with science is a huge responsibility. One that the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg joined forces to take on last year and excelled at. Together they won the Science Rendezvous 2023 STEAM Big! award.
