Convocation 2020: Honouring Indigenous graduates

Meet some of the incredible members of the University of Manitoba’s class of 2020. UM campuses are uniquely strengthened by Indigenous student perspectives. The Indigenous campus community includes many student leaders who continue to define new directions and move our nations, province and country forward with their ideas and passions. The following Indigenous students will graduate during UM Virtual Convocation on June 29.

June 29, 2020 — 
"I am a proud Métis woman who was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the birthplace of the Métis Nation and the heart of the Métis Nation Homeland," says Genevieve Benoit who attributes some amazing teachers and coaches at Vincent Massey Collegiate for encouraging her to set goals and work hard to reach them. She was an active member of the Alpha Gamma Delta women’s fraternity while completing a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Psychology at UM (2017). She returned to UM to study Law at Robson Hall because it was close to home, and allowed her to maintain connections and relationships with community, friends, and family.

Born in Cairo, Egypt to South Sudanese refugees, Elsa Kaka grew up in Winnipeg, inspired towards a life of advocacy by parents who challenged her to venture outside her comfort zone

A self-described band geek, Chimwemwe Undi attended Acadia Junior High when her family first immigrated to Winnipeg. After graduating from Fort Richmond Collegiate where she first discovered writing and performing poetry in the school's slam poetry club, she got serious with the scientific study of language, completing a B.A. (Adv) in linguistics at the University of Manitoba.

Historian Dr. Adele Perry has been appointed director of the Centre for Human Rights Research (CHRR) effective July 1, 2020. She takes over from founding director and law professor Karen Busby.

A Legacy of Human Rights Research

June 15, 2020 — 
When the Canadian Museum for Human Rights broke ground in 2009, Prof. Karen Busby was tasked with helping make the University of Manitoba a top choice for students and scholars of human rights. She agreed to spend six months consulting across campuses to come up with a plan. Eleven years later, Busby is stepping down as founding director of the university’s Centre for Human Rights Research, formally established in 2012.

Mammoth case law project complete

With extreme patience, diligence, organization and co-ordination, two Robson Hall law students have completed a "mammoth" case law annotation project that will benefit both Crown prosecutors and defence lawyers, and members of the judiciary.
