October 1, 2021 —
The Court has always provided direction on how parties engage with the justice system. Lawyers are told how to dress, where to stand, how to address their colleagues as well as Judges and courtroom staff. Law students engaged in experiential learning this year will find that the Courts are now asking people for the correct language to use when addressing parties in the courtroom.

Shawn Singh and the President’s Student Leadership Program
September 10, 2021 —
This summer was unusual for 3L Shawn Singh. For one thing, he worked as a research assistant for Assistant Professor Brandon Trask, published three articles including two in the Manitoba Law Journal, and one in a book published by Springer Nature. He got married – that was huge. Oh yes, and he was the only law student to be selected to take part in the University of Manitoba President’s Student Leadership Summer Program.

Achieving Access to Justice through language
September 3, 2021 —
In June of 2019, the Department of Justice Canada provided the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law with $768,372 in funding over four years (2018/19 to 2021/22) through its Access to Justice in Both Official Languages Support Fund. The purpose was to develop a common law certificate in French, making a more formal program out of what has so far consisted of a collection of bilingual course offerings. So far, two years’ worth of law students have been able to take advantage of the funding, and have been working towards being able to represent French-speaking clients once they graduate as lawyers.
