Faculty of Law to offer new mandatory Indigenous course
December 13, 2021 —
One of the most important accomplishments of the Law Faculty Council for the fall term of 2021 was to vote unanimously to approve the Faculty’s new Indigenous Course Requirement. The course has been named “Indigenous Methodologies and Perspectives" and will be offered in the second year of the Juris Doctorprogram. The course meets the requirements of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Call to Action 28.

Access to Justice French Endowment Fund established to help train law students

Supreme Court of Canada cites Law Professor’s book in key Human Rights case

Justices of the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) often research and cite the work of prominent Canadian legal scholars in their decisions. Dr. Donn Short, Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies) at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law, was recently cited by the SCC in the key human rights case decision, Ward v Quebec (Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse) 2021 SCC 43.

Annual Law Banquet returns in-person

The Ninth Annual Robson Hall Law Banquet took place on Thursday, October 28, 2021. The Law Banquet Co-Coordinators, law students Ashley Bains and Matthew Rakar were delighted to welcome 139 attendees to an in-person event at the Winnipeg Art Gallery this year. The attendees included a majority of the 1L class and lawyers from each of Manitoba’s five biggest law firms: Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP, MLT Aikins LLP, Fillmore Riley LLP, Taylor McCaffrey LLP, and Pitblado Law.

Law professors engage in cross-Canada collaboration on Law and Disability Case Book

The University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law professors frequently collaborate with scholars from other disciplines at other academic institutions, and this trend continues with the latest publication bearing the names of prolific legal researchers, Assistant Professor David Ireland and Professor Richard Jochelson, Dean of Law. Law and Disability in Canada: Cases and Materials is a comprehensive overview of – precisely what the title states. Ireland and Jochelson worked with four other academics and experts in the field, to develop this book which looks at the interactions of persons with disabilities with the law.

Sixteenth Annual Robson Hall Negotiation Competition a (Virtual) Success

Sixteen teams of Faculty of Law students competed in the sixteenth annual Robson Hall Negotiation Competition on the evening of October 19th, 2021, in a virtual format. These third-year students were selected for having excelled in the Legal Negotiation course they took in their second year of law school. Due to their stellar performance, the negotiating team of Allison Kilgour and Anna Siemens were awarded first place. The runners up, who also did a tremendous job, were Alexander Barnes, and Alexandra Broggy.

Roberta (Bobbie) Whiteman had already worked in the child welfare sector for at least 10 years when she first learned about the new Master of Human Rights (MHR) program being offered at the University of Manitoba. On October 18, she graduates as a member of the inaugural Master of Human Rights program class her thesis already demonstrating potential to impact the work she does in changing lives.
