Securing commitment: Tenure granted to law professors Curran and Ireland
January 25, 2022 —
Assistant Professors David Ireland and Bruce Curran at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law have been officially granted tenure, commencing July 1, 2022. The Faculty could not be more proud of these two deserving and hard-working scholars who have contributed so much to putting Robson Hall on the map of legal research in Canada.

The importance of Mindfulness and Lawyer Well-Being

The University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law is opening Robson Hall’s virtual doors to the entire legal community to attend a special session on Mindfulness on Monday, January 24 at 12:00 p.m. (CT). Western University’s Professor Thomas G.W. Telfer will speak to law students, faculty, staff, alumni and practicing legal professionals on the topic of “Mindfulness and Lawyer Well-Being.” This event is one of many mental health-oriented events on Robson Hall’s calendar throughout this second pandemic year.

Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law in high gear for new year
January 18, 2022 —
Since August, 2021, many of the goals set for the Marcel A. Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law have been attained. A new website complete with social media presence launched this fall. A regular blog and a Western Canada case reporter prepared by law students under faculty supervision are underway. A for-credit Scholarly Publications course for the peer-reviewed Desautels Review of Private Enterprise and Law began with the fall term as an official part of the Law Faculty’s course calendar. And that is just the beginning.

Reflecting on a year of change, Faculty of Law looks towards bright future
December 23, 2021 —
Another year of virtual teaching and learning has passed, another Spring graduating class of law students endured final exams, convocation ceremonies, grad celebrations and commencement of articles in front of a screen at home. Another cohort of 1L students were introduced to law school virtually. Professors spent another year recording and uploading lectures, staring at boxes on screens hoping students were behind them, heeding the lessons. At some point, everyone wondered where the community was and what was happening at Robson Hall?

Running down a dream – of law school

Since being appointed Dean of the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law on July 1, 2021, Dr. Richard Jochelson has been working non-stop to chip away at the iceberg-sized pile of much-needed upgrades to be made at Western Canada’s oldest law school. His efforts are already yielding significant results after nearly six months, especially in curriculum upgrades, addressing Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action #28, expanding externship and clinical opportunities, hiring much-needed faculty and staff, and deepening relationships between the Faculty and the broader legal community. It’s hard to think of where the Faculty might be today if he had pursued a Master’s in Zoology instead of Law.

An essential service: Robson Hall’s Admissions & Financial Aid Office

Becoming a lawyer starts with getting admitted to law school. It may be stating the obvious, but the Admissions Office at any university’s faculty of law is where many lawyers’ careers technically begin. The next practical matter is how admitted students are going to pay for their legal educations. Not everyone has the means to do so, even if they have the academic ability. Financial Aid and Awards is therefore the other essential part of a law school’s Admissions Office to help law students complete their degrees.

Faculty of Law takes major steps to answer Call to Action 28

Change can take a while to happen, but when the impact is finally felt, the results are rewarding. The amount of change between what third-year law student Katie Rothwell and first-year Melinda Moch have seen at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law in terms of Indigenization of the law school curriculum, is significant. This year alone, changes law students like Rothwell and Moch have witnessed include the creation of a Truth and Reconciliation Action Team, the hiring of an Indigenous Student Support Coordinator, and an increase of Indigenous content in mandatory first-year law courses.
