Promoting healing, education and reflection across the country

A member of the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, and an athlete who believes in the power of movement as medicine, UM law student Tréchelle Bunn founded a healing walk in July 2021 which has since grown into the Reconciliation Run, Canada's first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Half Marathon.

Building connections within the Indigenous campus community

A welcoming space for Indigenous faculty, staff, students, allies and friends across all UM campuses, the 90-minute Indigenous Connect meetings offer a chance for attendees to network, share their work, obtain feedback, and discuss programming, events, policy issues and other matters of importance, like the creation of the recent Indigenous identity policy.

Working together for excellence in Indigenous education

April 14 marked an exciting day for educators as Manitoba grew one step closer to making our province a global centre for Indigenous education, research, languages and cultures. Signatories of the Manitoba Collaborative Indigenous Education Blueprint—an unprecedented, collective effort to advance 10 education-related commitments informed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action—were joined by the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre, as well as the Province of Manitoba Advanced Education and Training, and Education and Early Childhood Learning departments.

UM’s Blankstein Momentum Program assists in student success

The Blankstein Momentum Program, offered by the Indigenous Student Centre, connects Indigenous students to UM resources they may not have known of or actively sought out on their own. Momentum uses a holistic approach that includes biweekly workshops (September – March), advisor meetings, access to tutors, group activities and cultural/spiritual care.
