A Brilliant Friend: The Legacy of Butch Nepon

Once upon a time there was a law professor who was beloved by students, colleagues and Faculty of Law alumni alike. His name was Matthew Bernard Nepon, and he was a graduate of the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law, class of 1967. Everyone called him “Butch.” He never had children, but for the past two decades, law students at his alma mater have continued to benefit from his legacy, whether they knew it or not. Now that family members who remember their ‘Uncle Butch’ are getting older, they thought it important to share the story of the extraordinary man behind the Butch Nepon Memorial Bursary.

Black Law Students Association invites undergrads to “see yourself here” at Robson Hall
March 8, 2023 —
As she wandered through University Centre one day, early in her first-year of law school, Meseret Alem noticed the diverse student population around her. She asked herself, “If there’s so many Black students in other parts of campus, why isn’t there a similar concentration among law students at Robson Hall?” Very soon after that, together with fellow law students, she resurrected the Manitoba chapter of the Black Law Students’ Association of Canada, became its Co-President, and has been working to organize “See Yourself Here,” a recruiting event for Black students considering careers in law.

A match made in law: Wedding gift to students establishes new Prize for Alternative Dispute Resolution in Family Law
July 25, 2022 —
Thinking outside the (gift) box, law professor Dr. Jennifer L. Schulz and her fiancé, family lawyer Elliott Goszer are giving, rather than receiving, a wedding gift to benefit law students at their alma mater, the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law. The Schulz/Goszer Prize for Alternative Dispute Resolution in Family Law will be given annually to a University of Manitoba law student who writes the best Alternative Dispute Resolution-themed paper in an upper year family law course, or the best family law-themed paper in an upper year dispute resolution course.
