David Asper, Q.C., an outstanding UM alumnus whose legal work, business activities and philanthropy have improved the lives of countless Manitobans and Canadians, has been named Acting Dean for the Faculty of Law effective July 1, 2020.

August 7, 2020 — 
A less-than-perfect mark on a paper doesn't mean you should give up on the idea, second-year law student Adam Lakusta discovered this year. Despite getting a B on his Issues in Law and Bio Ethics class term paper, hearing a talk from a visiting scholar inspired him to revise the paper and submit it anyway to the Canadian Bar Association Intellectual Property Section's annual law student essay competition. His essay won.

July 27, 2020 — 
Connections between law and journalism are clear to see in the career path of former broadcast journalist Keith McCullough. After working in the broadcast industry for more than six years, he wanted a new and fulfilling challenge. "My hope was that many of my skills would transfer from journalism to law," he said. "Luckily, I was proven right."

July 24, 2020 — 
Edmonton-born Alyssa Cloutier knew as early as high school that she wanted to be a lawyer. Growing up in Oakbank, Manitoba, she developed a strong interest in law while at Springfield Collegiate Institute, and decided then, to do both undergraduate and law degrees close to home at the University of Manitoba. She chose law after completing a double major in History and Psychology, because, "I wanted a career that would challenge me every day and provide me with the opportunity to continuously learn new things," she said.

July 15, 2020 — 
A Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Lorna Turnbull explains the importance of recognizing and naming systemic racism and the responsibility of everyone to address it so as to work toward creating a more just society. Her opinion piece was published on page A007 in the Winnipeg Free Press on Tuesday, July 14, 2020.

July 14, 2020 — 
Born practically next door to the University of Manitoba at Victoria Hospital and raised in Winnipeg in a family of UM alumni, attending UM was the obvious choice for Anjali Sandhu. Discovering a passion for law, she won numerous prizes, awards and scholarships for obtaining high marks and highest standings in many of her classes, concluding her law school career as class Valedictorian. Did we mention that Sandhu is also a stand-up comedian and professional actor?

July 10, 2020 — 
Born in Nigeria and raised in Winnipeg, Michael Akins graduated from Oak Park High School and headed straight for the University of Manitoba on sports scholarships. Akins transitioned from sports to law because of his older sister. "She was the smartest person I knew growing up and I was always inspired by her academic drive and leadership," he says.

Some of the prizes for the Juris Doctor Class of 2020 have been confirmed and announced this week. We are pleased to share with the Robson Hall Faculty of Law Community, the names of graduating students who have won some of this year's prizes.
