Winnipeg Free Press: Serendipity: London’s path through life and law

Winnipeg Free Press reporter Susie Strachan interviewed former Dean of Law Jack London, C.M., Q.C., LL.M. [LLB/66] for a story that appeared in the Sou'wester on October 23, 2020. The alumnus and former law professor who is still senior council at Pitblado LLP, was interviewed prior to appearing as a guest speaker at a virtual Faculty of Law alumni event. He had just launched his published memoirs at McNally Robinson Booksellers on October 15, titled Serendipity: My path through life and law. Home is where the heart is

With gathering together off the table this fall, the Faculty of Law still found a way to bring alumni "home" to celebrate two beloved professors and catch up on the latest law faculty goings-on. A 200-plus-person Zoom call held November 5th bore witness to the celebration of Professor John Irvine's 50th year of teaching at the Faculty of Law, and a fireside chat-style visit with former dean of law (1979-1984) Jack R. London, C.M., Q.C., LL.M. [LLB/66].

Fifteenth Annual Robson Hall Negotiation Competition a Success
October 30, 2020 —
Sixteen teams of Robson Hall students competed in the fifteenth annual Robson Hall Negotiation Competition on the evening of October 29th, 2020. These third-year students were selected for having excelled in the Legal Negotiation course they took in their second year of law school. The main purpose of the competition is to develop superb negotiating skills in Robson Hall graduates. All legal training and professional expertise is directed toward one key objective—solving a client’s problems. Negotiation is a primary tool for accomplishing precisely that.

Sixteen teams of Robson Hall students competed in the fifteenth annual Robson Hall Negotiation Competition on the evening of October 29th, 2020. Convocation October 2020: LLM Student Steve Falkingham
October 15, 2020 —
Majoring in Classics at the University of Manitoba may not have led Steve Falkingham directly to a career in corporate and commercial law at a major Winnipeg firm, but it may have been a factor in his dedication to continuing his education. Being a strong advocate for lifelong learning definitely had a role in his decision to return to his law school alma mater to complete a Master's degree in Law, from which he graduates this fall.

UM Law adapts to online campus with Virtual Tour and community-building media

With the COVID-19 pandemic keeping most University of Manitoba buildings closed for the 2020-2021 academic year, the Faculty of Law and the community that would normally gather in Robson Hall, including the Master of Human Rights program and the Centre for Human Rights Research, has turned to alternate means to keep in contact.

Manitoba Law Journal Offers Top-Flight Content

The Manitoba Law Journal has been very busy lately. Despite delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the staff of the Manitoba Law Journal (both Faculty and student editors) have been able to complete Volume 42 of the MLJ. Volume 43 will be fully available before the end of 2020. Each will consist of 5 issues and more than 40 pieces when released.

This week, the series kicked off with a talk by Western Law’s Assistant Professor Suzanne Chiodo who spoke on “Six Months in a Pandemic: The Impact of COVID-19 on the Civil Justice System in Ontario”.
