Rady Faculty statement in response to shooting in Buffalo

May 20, 2022 — 
On Saturday, May 14, 2022,  10 Black people were killed and three were injured in a horrifying act of anti-Black racism in Buffalo, New York. Adding to the violence and trauma was a 180-page hate-filled manifesto and the social media live-streaming of the mass shooting. As the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, we acknowledge and think of the families and communities who are grieving the loss of their loved ones.

Women in rural northern India must clear a long series of hurdles to give birth safely, including finding a health centre with competent nurses and medication that has access to specialists if something goes wrong. University of Manitoba researcher Dr. Vasanthakumar Namasivayam is helping lower those hurdles, one by one.

When David Ambrose [BMROT/00] was 10 years old, growing up in Teulon, Man., the first seeds of his career were planted while he watched the Calgary Flames make a run for the Stanley Cup in 1989. It wasn’t hockey legends like Lanny McDonald who caught his attention. Instead, he noticed Bearcat Murray, the team’s athletic trainer, tending to injured players on the ice.
