Graduate programs in nursing reach 40-year milestone

In 1980, the College of Nursing took a major step in its evolution: it admitted the first students to its inaugural master of nursing program. “It’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years,” says associate professor Judith Scanlan [BN/67, M.Ed./83, PhD/96], former associate dean, graduate programs, who has been teaching at the college for 46 years and joined the full-time faculty in 1983. “We’ve come a long way.”

Nursing alumni honoured as trailblazing women

In January, the Nellie McClung Foundation announced Manitoba’s 150 Women Trailblazers in the Winnipeg Free Press. The list included several University of Manitoba alumna, including two esteemed colleagues from what is now the College of Nursing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.

College of Nursing celebrates graduate student competition winners

When the College of Nursing postponed the 2020 Helen Glass Research Symposium in March, it was only days before the University of Manitoba cancelled in-person classes due to COVID-19. However, at that point, submissions were already sent in for one of the symposium’s signature events, the Graduate Student Poster Competition.

Bear medicine at core of Indigenous nursing pathway

When the committee behind the College of Nursing’s Aboriginal Nursing Cohort Initiative (ANCI) decided it had outgrown its name, the group looked for a symbol to reflect the healing, strength and courage that are at the program’s core of providing support to Indigenous students interested in attaining a degree in nursing.

Nurse practitioner program among first to receive national accreditation

The College of Nursing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences is celebrating a significant milestone, as its nurse practitioner program was among the first in Canada to receive accreditation from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN), the national voice for nursing education, research and scholarship.

Organizers of an annual Orange Shirt Day walk at the University of Manitoba were not going to let a pandemic stop them from honouring those affected by Canada’s residential school system in 2020.
