Born in Nigeria and raised in Winnipeg, Michael Akins graduated from Oak Park High School and headed straight for the University of Manitoba on sports scholarships. Akins transitioned from sports to law because of his older sister. "She was the smartest person I knew growing up and I was always inspired by her academic drive and leadership," he says.

A new study by researchers at the University of Manitoba and the University of British Columbia (UBC) has found that bacteria are shared and possibly transferred from a mother’s milk to her infant’s gut, and that breastfeeding directly at the breast best supports this process.
