Exhibit on the polar adventures of explorer, alumni Andrew Taylor

Archives & Special Collections will open The Polar Adventures of Andrew Taylor: A Biographical Exploration on Sept. 24. The exhibit will run until August 31, 2015.

The extensive exhibit focuses on alumnus Dr. Andrew Taylor [BSc(CE)/31, DSc/91], an engineer, explorer, geographer, writer and antiquarian bookseller who led the secret mission, “Operation Tabarin” in the Antarctic, south of Cape Horn, during the Second World War. He worked as a Dominion Land Surveyor in northern Manitoba, established the infrastructure for Flin Flon as town engineer, was one of three observers on the American/Canadian weather station reconnaissance venture “US Naval Task Force 68,” and developed an expertise in winter roads and airstrips.

In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments, Taylor received many awards and honors, including the Polar Medal (1954), the Order of Canada (1986), the Vilhjalmur Stefansson Award (1990), and an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Manitoba (1991), among others, and had a mountain named after him in the Antarctic.

When: September 17, 2014, until August 31, 2015; the exhibit is open  Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
