Innovative UM research focuses on brain stimulation to improve benefits of cognitive behavioural therapy

The Winnipeg Foundation Innovation Fund has awarded a $100,000 grant to a University of Manitoba research team aiming to improve the benefits of cognitive behavioural therapy by combining it with non-invasive brain stimulation.

OT Symposium highlights occupational therapy research

July 8, 2022 — 
Second-year master of occupational therapy students at the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences showcased their research projects at an online symposium June 22. The 2022 Critical Inquiry Research Project Symposium featured 17 presentations from 47 students with topics ranging from technology solutions for people with disabilities to addressing racism in health care education.

UM neurosurgery resident receives CIHR fellowship to study brain injuries

July 4, 2022 — 
Near the start of Dr. Alwyn Gomez’s residency training, he was on call when a young patient arrived with a traumatic brain injury after falling off a horse. Her family wanted to know how she was going to do. Gomez didn’t have the answer.

Rudy Falk Clinician-Scientist Professorship award winner seeks to prevent rheumatoid arthritis

Will Falk describes his father, Rudy Falk [B.Sc.Med./60, MD/60] as a “classic triple threat.” Rudy Falk was a surgeon, professor at the University of Toronto and director of the Falk Oncology Centre. His dedication to research and clinical practice inspired the Rudy Falk Professorship award. This year’s recipient, assistant professor of immunology, Liam O’Neil [BSc/09, MD/12] embodies Falk’s zeal for research and clinical practice.

Tele-rehabilitation enables virtual physio, outreach beyond perimeter

As part of a new collaboration called Rural Rehabilitation Outreach, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences moved its Physical Therapy Neuro Rehab Clinic from UM’s Bannatyne Campus to Riverview Health Centre on April 11.

$30 million for patient-oriented research in Manitoba: Funding will strengthen patient voice in health research and health system

Manitoba patients, their families and caregivers will continue to have direct input into health research and what works best in the health-care system, thanks to $6.6 million in Phase 2 funding from the pan-Canadian initiative called the Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR).
