When Ariel Gordon says she’s the new Writer-in-Residence (WIR) in the Buller Greenhouse, she’s not kidding. In fact, Gordon is the first-ever WIR in the greenhouse, based on her proposal to its staff and the Department of Biological Sciences after receiving a Self-Directed Residency grant from the Manitoba Arts Council.

The Faculty of Science is thrilled to announce that Dr. Jayanne English, Department of Physics and Astronomy, at the University of Manitoba has been selected by the Canadian Astronomical Society (CASCA) for the 2021 Qilak Award. The Qilak Award for Astronomy Outreach and Communication recognizes individual Canadian residents, or teams of residents, who have made an outstanding contribution either to the public understanding and appreciation of astronomy in Canada or to informal astronomy education in Canada.

On February 4, 2021, the Faculty of Science celebrates the Honoured Alumni Award recipients and their incredible accomplishments at the Pathways to Exceptional Achievement event. As these alumni prove a degree in science opens many doors.

February 2, 2021 — 
Dr. Robert Tate continues to advance health science as Director of the Manitoba Follow-Up Study (MFUS), the longest-running study of cardiovascular disease and aging in Canada. It started at the University of Manitoba in 1948, and in the 72 years of the project, 44 of them have involved Dr. Tate, more than 50 of whose publications come from this study.

February 2, 2021 — 
Dr. Emily Choy [Ph.D./17], a Postdoctoral Fellow at McGill University and Environment and Climate Change Canada has been tirelessly contributing to research on climate change and its effect on the Canadian North.
