TA Training – Online Workshops

May 4, 2020 —

The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning will be offering training for Teaching Assistants (TAs) to support TAs who will be working remotely in Summer 2020. These workshops are completely optional and you are not required to attend as part of your role as a TA. Workshops do not have to be attended in a specific order. Registration for these workshops will open on Thursday, May 7th at 10:00 AM.

Three different workshops (70 minutes each) will be offered once per week during the weeks of May 11th-June 5th. The workshops are:

1. Working in a Remote Learning Environment

In this workshop, participants will explore strategies for working in a remote learning environment including how to prepare for your role in supporting instructors and students. We will discuss strategies for communicating with the course instructor to identify their expectations and how to determine your roles and responsibilities in the course. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the workshop in an informal Q&A session with the facilitator.

2. Communication and Student Engagement in Remote Learning

In this workshop, you will learn about different aspects of communication in remote learning courses. We will talk about how to communicate with students effectively in the course including via email, in discussion forums, and by holding virtual office hours. We will also explore best practices for engaging students in remote learning environments. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the workshop in an informal Q&A session with the facilitator.

3. Assessment and Grading

In this workshop, participants will explore key aspects of assessment and grading in remote learning environments. We will discuss different types of assessments that may be used in a course, along with a brief overview of rubrics and their use in grading. Strategies for providing written feedback on students’ assignments will be shared so that you can provide meaningful and effective feedback to help your students succeed in the course. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the workshop in an informal Q&A session with the facilitator.

Note: If you are unable to attend the workshops, content from the workshops will be added to a webpage under The Centre’s Contingencies for Teaching webpage. The webpage can be found here: https://centre.cc.umanitoba.ca/contingencies-for-teaching/. You will click on the icon for “Resources for Teaching Assistants” to access the page.
