Next-generation networking coming to UM

April 24, 2023 — 
Information Services and Technology (IST) has partnered with Cisco on the next generation of networking for the University of Manitoba. The Network Segmentation Project was launched in April of 2021 to design and implement a new and improved campus-wide network. This new network and its associated technologies will improve network security, stability, and ease of use for all students, staff and faculty. Our IT support staff will also see improvements in administration, automation, and analysis.

April 17, 2023 — 
On March 27, the university’s Information Security and Compliance Team conducted their semi-annual phishing test. The subject of the email, “Important notice regarding your recent tax filing,” encouraged employees to click a link to verify missing or incorrect information on their University of Manitoba T4 tax information.

Recent TikTok bans highlight the importance of social media security

Currently, the university does not restrict which apps can and cannot be used. Instead, we encourage everyone to stay aware of the privacy risks when using social media platforms such as TikTok, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

March is Fraud Prevention Month

Fraud is a growing concern in Canada, and universities are not immune to this problem. According to the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre, $530 million was lost to fraud in 2022 - a 28% increase from 2021.

Long lineups are common on campus during peak times of the school year, especially during the start of the Fall or Winter semesters. A queue management system can help better manage traffic, reduce time spent standing in a physical line, and increase the time university staff can spend providing student services.

Banner Administration Pages upgrade coming this January 2023

Banner Administration Pages and Aurora Self-Service will be upgraded to the latest version from January 6, 2023, at 4 p.m. to January 9, 2023, at 8 a.m. This upgrade will bring important security enhancements and focus on improving the quality of the Administration Pages and Aurora Self-Service. It also includes changes to support the tax year 2022.
