Supreme Court Justice inspires philosophical discussion

April 16, 2024 — 
The Faculty of Law was pleased to welcome The Honourable Malcolm Rowe, a justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, to visit with law students on March 28, 2024. Students, professors and legal professionals filled the Moot Courtroom to first hear him give a short lecture on the work of late SCC Justice Ivan Rand regarding Freedom of Expression, and later open the floor to questions facilitated by law students Logan Nadeau (1L), and Talia David (3L).

Robson Hall Coffee House revival

April 9, 2024 — 
The Manitoba Law Students' Association's Spirit and Community Outreach committees hosted a revival of the annual Robson Hall Coffee House on March 22 at VW Social Club. The event is an opportunity for law students and faculty members to reveal hidden talents for a good cause.

Second Annual Art Braid Business Law Case Competition honours late professor’s legacy

April 9, 2024 — 
Edwin Arthur Braid, Q.C. (1934 – 2020), or ‘Art’, the beloved former Dean and Professor at Robson Hall, the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law, had many passions. He was well known for his kindness, his commitment to intellectual discourse, and his precision and clarity as a teacher, among other things. In addition to the multitude of positive attributes associated with him, Art Braid was known for his affinity for business law.

Cultivating Creativity and Commerce

In a dynamic collaboration between the L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic and Manitoba Legal Clinic for the Arts, four third-year law students —Ashley Slagerman, Kaylee Furber, Jamie Robertson, and Rebecca Penner from the Faculty of Law —enriched their final year of Law School by sharing as well as enriching the Grade 9-10 Balmoral Hall Venture Development and Law classes at Balmoral Hall, on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, with an engaging and informative presentation covering business law basics.

Moot Report 2024: Manitoba Team proudly represents at Bastarache Moot

April 1, 2024 — 
The Bastarache Moot was recently held at the University of Ottawa from March 22 to March 24, 2024. This French-language moot recognizing the Honourable Michel Bastarache, a former justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, has been held annually since 2019. Brent Tichon (2L) was recognized as the 4th best mooter for his oral arguments during the competition (4e meilleur plaideur).

Moot Report 2024: Manitoba Team wins Spirit of the Laskin Award

March 28, 2024 — 
Thirty-six teams participated in this year’s Laskin Moot which was held from February 29 to March 2, 2024 at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law. The Laskin Moot is a highly regarded national bilingual moot in administrative and constitutional law. The Manitoba Team was honoured to be awarded the Spirit of the Laskin award, the recipients for which are selected by the other teams and given to the school that best showcases the spirit of the moot – fair competition, commitment to bilingualism, and professional camaraderie.

Faculty of Law announces 2023 Alumni Award recipients

To celebrate the achievements of graduates, the Faculty of Law created the Faculty of Law Alumni Awards which are presented annually in three categories: Outstanding Alumni Award, Emerging Leader Award, and the Trailblazer Award. Congratulations to the winners of the 2023 UM Law Alumni Awards: Bradley Regehr, K.C. [LLB/96], Outstanding Alumni Award Heather Wadsworth [JD/15], Emerging Leader Award Dr. Brent Roussin [BSc/96, MD/00, JD/09, MPH/11], Trailblazer Award.

Law students present outstanding academic work at national conferences

March 24, 2024 — 
The high calibre of academic work being produced by Faculty of Law students this year has garnered several third-year Juris Doctor students at Robson Hall invitations to present papers at national conferences this month. No less than three students including Matthew London, Justin Papoff, and Megan Simpson, attended the Windsor Review of Legal and Social Issues 17th Annual Canadian Law Student Conference, held March 14th and 15th, 2024 at the University of Windsor law school. Lou Lamari (3L) presented a paper at the McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism’s Disability and Human Rights Student Colloquium, that took place March 22.

Moot Report 2024: University of Manitoba Represents at Canadian National Negotiation Competition

March 10, 2024 — 
Three University of Manitoba Faculty of Law teams from Robson Hall recently competed in the eighth annual Canadian National Negotiation Competition (CNNC). The competition was held at McGill University, Faculty of Law in Montreal on March 1st and 2nd, 2024, and for the second year in a row had both a French and an English stream. Against a talented field of the best law student negotiators from across Canada, the three U of M teams of Éric Gagnon and Seth Lozinski; Ryan Hall and Nicolas Nudler; and Rebecca Penner and Jamie Robertson put in extremely strong showings. The pair of Éric Gagnon & Seth Lozinski, who competed in the French stream, even received the “Spirit of Negotiation” award for that stream, which is peer-nominated and goes to the team that best illustrates the values of collaboration, humility, teamwork and respect.
