CBC: Engineer Diana Nicholson to receive University of Manitoba’s young alumni award
University of Manitoba engineering graduate, Diana Nicholson, is the 2016 recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award at the University of Manitoba’s Distinguished Alumni Awards. The prizes are handed out in Winnipeg on Thursday.
Nicholson has worked around the world for Médecins Sans Frontières delivering clean drinking water to developing communities. She has travelled to South Sudan and the Central African Republic during armed conflicts and to Sierra Leone during the Ebola outbreak.
Nicholson sat down with CBC’s Ismaila Alfa on Tuesday to talk about what drives her and why she chose humanitarian work.
Ismaila Alfa: What does this award mean to you?
Diana Nicholson: I just had a lunch with the vice president of the University of Manitoba which is such an honour and I was just telling them how I’m still in disbelief. From the moment I was contacted about the nomination, let alone to have been informed that I’m actually receiving it to now where it’s actually happening — I’m just in a state of shock.
