How can you be a leader at the U of M?

Alumni from tonight's Leadership Speaker Series provide their answers

September 16, 2014 —

Tonight, Student Life will host four outstanding University of Manitoba alumni at the second annual Leadership Speaker Series during Homecoming. Students, staff, faculty and alumni are welcome to come hear from a group of speakers whose journeys took them from the U of M to being national leaders in their fields.

In advance of the event, UM Today asked a few of the speakers, “How can people be leaders in the U of M community?”

Rana Bokhari [J.D./12, B.A./08], Leader, Manitoba Liberal Party

“The fundamental trait universal to all leaders is drive. Ultimately, a person’s drive to succeed will trump any amount of experience, education or money. It will push you not only to dream, but to put in the gruelling amounts of work to achieve that dream. I have met many young people who have goals and ambitions they perceive to be outside of their reach; I can tell you they are not. Find out what interests you, what really speaks to you deep down, and go for it. Once you start to actualize your dreams, you will gain the support of like-minded people who will want to work with you to accomplish some common goal. This is the foundation of leadership in its truest sense.”

Allan Levine [B.A./77], Historian and Award-Winning Author

“The U of M provides each individual with the learning and skills to succeed. Each person has something unique to bring to the community and finding one’s strengths and talents and acting upon them in a deliberate and positive way is the key to enhancing the larger university community. A university community, in particular, is diverse, and a successful leader must seek out advice and assistance from a variety of experts as necessary.”

Deanna Hansen [B.Sc/90], Founder and CEO, Fluid Isometrics

“I never set out to be a leader, it evolved as a result of following my passion. I think one of the most important things to realize is you are going to make mistakes along the way. It is best to own them. This provides a platform for excellence, not perfection.”
