Law student advocates for Truth & Reconciliation 365 days a year

Over 150 runners assembled at the ruins of the Birtle, Manitoba Residential School on the morning of Saturday, September 30, to honour Residential School Survivors and those who never made it home. The ruins marked the starting line of the Second Annual Reconciliation Run, organized by first-year law student Tréchelle Bunn. Her home community, the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, marked the finish line of the half-marathon, officially sanctioned by the Manitoba Runners’ Association

A member of the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, and an athlete who believes in the power of movement as medicine, UM law student Tréchelle Bunn founded a healing walk in July 2021 which has since grown into the Reconciliation Run, Canada's first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Half Marathon.

UM makes Indigenous Law course mandatory for all law students, and offers new concentrations this fall

December 9, 2022 — 
A course in Indigenous law will be mandatory for all law students starting next year, and students will also have the opportunity to focus their studies in one of three new concentrations including Private Enterprise and the Law, Law and Society, and Criminal Law and Justice, in addition to the existing concentration in Access to Justice in French. Graduate law students will also see changes to the Master of Laws program including now having the opportunity to take clinical experience electives.
