When was the last time you went shopping? Was it for something essential, like groceries, or something that could be considered a luxury? If you’re the average consumer, it likely wasn’t that long ago. How about the last time you went an entire day without buying anything, can you remember? In today’s modern society it’s very common for shopping to be pursued as a leisure activity, a way to take one’s mind off the big picture and relax for awhile.

November 1, 2018 — 
This fall, a workshop is being held to encourage faculty to share their thoughts on how to encourage education for sustainability on campus. The workshops will explore the approaches, opportunities and barriers around educating for sustainability at the University of Manitoba.

October 17, 2018 — 
Plastic bags are one of – if not the – most misunderstood item in the world of waste reduction. Currently in Winnipeg, as well as many recycling facilities around the world, plastic bags cannot be processed as part of the blue bin system. The U of M has partnered with Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba (MMSM) to combat our plastic bag use on campus.

October 12, 2018 — 
Disposable coffee cups are a big problem not only for the U of M, but also across the globe. The university community can do its part to prevent more disposable coffee cups from ending up in the landfill.

October 12, 2018 — 
The most recent addition to composting on campus starts Oct. 15, 2018. The Arts Student Body Council (ASBC), in partnership with the Office of Sustainability, is beginning a compost pilot project with Compost Winnipeg. The pilot project will be kept in motion by student sustainability ambassador volunteers and will be maintained by ASBC and the Office of Sustainability.

September 17, 2018 — 
On Monday, September 24, the University of Manitoba’s Bannatyne campus will mark a milestone as the first university campus in Manitoba to receive the Fair Trade Campus designation from the Canadian Fair Trade Network (CFTN) for its promotion of social and environmental sustainability and innovation.

“Coda”, an exposé of bird window strike mortality, will open on Sept. 17, with a reception at 5 p.m.

September 13, 2018 — 
The World’s Largest Lesson introduces the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to youth around the world and unites them in action. The SDGs target the challenges people face around the world and encourage everyone to take action and strive to make our planet a better place. Starting Sept. 24, the University of Manitoba encourages you to start your journey to raise awareness about the 17 Global Goals through a engaging Instagram contest!

Dr. John Robinson, a leading expert in the fields of sustainability and climate change, will deliver a public lecture on Sept. 26 along with other sustainability-focused events
