Congratulations to SoA Professor Grace Nickel, recipient of the 2023 Saidye Bronfman Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts

Dr. Edward Jurkowski was recently appointed as Director of the School of Art (SOA), from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2027. Also serving as the Dean of the Desautels Faculty of Music and as a tenured professor in the faculty, he is a highly esteemed leader whose 25 years of experience will lead the SOA into the future. We chatted with Dr. Jurkowski about what has inspired him as a student and professor, what he hopes for the future, and what he enjoys in his free time.

The Performance of Shadows, curated by Lillian O’Brien Davis is on now at the School of Art Gallery, and considers the expansiveness of three artists’ understanding of existence through various approaches to concepts of phenomenology, spirituality and political engagement.

The University of Manitoba is pleased to announce the following appointment and extension: Dr. Edward Jurkowski has been appointed Director, School of Art for the period of January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2027.

Open Structure exhibition explores the subtle rhythms and systems that structure our lives and considers how sound, music, and touch can offer new perspectives on systems, such as identity and the rules that govern our lives, providing space to pause, gather, and dream.

We are pleased to congratulate School of Art Design alum Shaneela Boodoo who was selected C New Critics 2022 Award recipient announced by C Magazine on December 2, 2022!

December 4, 2022 — 
One of the world's best-known Moholy-Nagy researchers, art historian, curator, and School of Art Professor Dr. Oliver Botar received the Moholy-Nagy Award on October 27 from Rector József Fülöp at the MOME Campus.

November 22, 2022 — 
A collaborative exhibition showcasing the obscure ties between the craft of Beading and the craft of Sculpture. 

September 22, 2022 — 
In June 2021, the School of Art Gallery at the University of Manitoba launched its Visiting Curator Program. The Visiting Curator Program was designed to play a vital role in defining contemporary art and its attendant discourses in Western Canada and beyond.
