Talented, dedicated faculty members earn 2017 Merit Awards

Three professors at Robson Hall Faculty of Law have received prestigious recognition for their work after being named winners of the 2017 UM/UMFA Merit Awards. In the Humanities and Social Sciences section, Dr. Bruce Curran and Dr. Virginia Torrie received Merit Awards in the category of Teaching. Dr. Donn Short won a Merit Award in the combined category of Research, Teaching & Service. This is Dr. Short’s fourth university award.

Faculty of Law mourns passing of Roland Penner, former Dean, senior scholar, alumnus

The Dean's Office of Robson Hall Faculty of Law, shared sad news with Faculty, staff and students in an email this weekend. "It is with great sadness that I relay to you the passing of Roland Penner, who until his death, was a Senior Scholar at Robson Hall and previous Dean (1989 - 94)," said Dr. Jonathan Black-Branch, Dean of Law.

Building Bridges conference brings Indigenous and Newcomer communities together

Last year in May, 2017, a unique conference titled "Building Bridges Between Canada's Indigenous and Newcomer Groups" was held at Thunderbird House in Winnipeg. The event resulted from discussions on Canada’s 150th and the conflicting senses of pride, frustration, pain and hope alongside the important work of welcoming and successfully settling newcomers to Canada; as well as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action that mandated a more inclusive history of Indigenous experiences and the history of residential schools in the newcomer information kit, citizenship test and oath.

Outstanding Law Student recognizes teachers who inspired her to achieve goals

Zita De Sousa graduates this spring from Robson Hall Faculty of Law, intent on pursuing a career in the criminal justice system. On Monday, May 15 at the 2018 Students’ Teacher Recognition Reception (STRR), she expressed heartfelt thanks to two teachers who inspired her in the face of adversity to achieve her goals. Selected as the Faculty of Law’s Outstanding Student for this year’s STRR, she in turn chose her grade 12 student advisor and English teacher from Maples Collegiate, Ms. Debbie Boyko, and Faculty of Law Associate Professor Richard Jochelson to stand with her as Outstanding Teachers.

Law Professor Promotes International Indigenous Rights Advocacy at UN

Brenda Gunn, an Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law, has worked for years in the area of International Indigenous Rights Advocacy, attending the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) at least 10 times in the past 14 years. Each time, she attends in some capacity to present, learn, discuss, or raise awareness of international issues affecting Indigenous people in Canada. This April 17, she organized and participated in a side-event at the Forum, which served to share different perspectives on the theme of lands and resources.

New study measures impact of religious affiliation on LGBTQ-inclusive education practices

The House Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration (CIMM) has published its report "Road to Recovery: Resettlement Issues of Yazidi Women and Children in Canada." For two key recommendations, the report relies on evidence given by Assistant Professor Shauna Labman, who teaches Immigration and Refugee Law at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law.

Associate Professor Amar Khoday recently had an article published in the Cardozo Arts and Entertainment Law Journal. The Journal is ranked 4th among Arts, Entertainment and Sports law journals in the US as of 2016. Dr. Khoday's article is titled Valorizing Disobedience within the Ranks: Law and Resistance in American Military Films.
