There has been a marked increase in phishing scams during the coronavirus outbreak. With many staff and faculty now working at home, it is important to be on the alert and to remain vigilant for potential scams.

New Information Security policy, procedure and standards have been developed to better protect the information used and shared by the university community, both within and outside the university.

A number of phishing and online scams surfacing seek to capitalize on the public concern surrounding the Coronavirus-COVID-19. Scammers often take advantage of health scares and this pandemic has spawned dozens of such campaigns, scaring recipients into clicking on harmful links or attachments in emails, text messages and social media posts.

February 25, 2020 — 
Cybercriminals use types of social engineering—manipulating people into doing what they want—as the most common way to steal information and money. Social engineering is at the heart of all types of phishing attacks—those conducted via email, SMS, and phone calls. Today’s technology makes these sorts of attacks easy and very low risk for the attacker.

The Information Services and Technology (IST) is pleased to announce that our Client Services department has changed its name to IST Engagement Services. “We are excited about the new department name. It reflects the importance of engaging with our colleagues, partnering with faculty, staff, researchers and students and focusing on long-term relationships with our peers at the university,” says K-L Holter, Director, IST Engagement Services.

Your university UMnetID, email address, and password are your keys to using our campus systems. They allow you to log into your email, UMLearn, all of your student records, financial records and the important data you have stored on your personal or shared drives. Imagine if those keys got into the wrong hands?

Information Services and Technology (IST) is introducing a new encryption service to protect data on all IST supported Windows and MAC devices. Encryption will make your data unreadable if your device is misplaced, lost or stolen.
