Your university UMnetID, email address, and password are your keys to using our campus systems. They allow you to log into your email, UMLearn, all of your student records, financial records and the important data you have stored on your personal or shared drives. Imagine if those keys got into the wrong hands?

A new initiative to protect university data is underway!

Information Security & Compliance sent all U of M employees a simulated phishing email during National Fraud Prevention Month in March. Last year, the same phishing simulation was used. And like last year, the email pretended to be from the university’s payroll department and contained the subject line, “Important notice regarding your tax information.”

We need to talk about your password

It is annoying to have to remember multiple passwords for all of the different sites and services we use - our bank, email, social media sites etc. - which is why it is so tempting to use the same password in multiple locations. If you used that password for multiple services and it was somehow compromised by a fraudulent email message for example, a cyber criminal would have access to all of your accounts. That is a big risk to take.

Canada’s premier conference for higher education IT leaders and experts in advanced research and computing (ARC) will be hosted at the U of M this June 18-21 and you are invited to attend. The Canadian Higher Education Information Technology Conference, known as CANHEIT, brings together professionals working directly in higher education IT or in a related area to share their experiences and learn from each other.
