Message from Laurie M. Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students) – Jan. 14

January 14, 2021 —

A Message from Laurie M. Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students):

Happy New Year and welcome to the 2021 Winter Term! I hope that you had a restorative and restful break.

Whether you are new to the UM community or continuing in your studies, we are here to support your personal and academic success. There are a wide range of student supports available to you – please take advantage of them as needed throughout your academic journey.

As you will have read in President Benarroch’s message this week, in keeping with our continued commitment to the safety and wellbeing of the UM community, Summer Term 2021 will be delivered primarily remotely. Please note that registration for Summer Term will open in Aurora on April 5th

While we are all encouraged by the news that vaccinations are slowly rolling out in Manitoba, each of us must continue to be vigilant in ensuring our own health and safety and that of others in our community. We have created a webpage about COVID-19, specifically for students, that provides a great deal of useful information and resources, including protocols aimed at keeping our community safe, a list of on-campus study spaces, and much more. If you are required to come to campus, the webpage also features a list of what is open on campus, and how to access those areas.

As you prepare to launch into your courses, please check out the presentation, “Are you ready for Winter term?” delivered by undergraduate academic advisors. It includes an overview of grading options and how to prepare for a successful semester.

I also encourage you to register for the virtual UM Annual Career Fair taking place January 21st. Over seventy employers are participating! Remember, it’s never too early to explore your career options.

And, lastly, if you are new to the University, I encourage you to participate in the winter welcome this week. Many outstanding sessions are being offered and, if you missed some of them, recordings will be available.

I will be in touch again as things continue to evolve. Meanwhile, be sure to check your UM email, read the Student Weekly e-newsletter, follow UM Student social media channels, and check the student COVID-19 webpage regularly.

I am wishing each of you good health and much personal and academic success this term. Remember that we are in this together, and above all, don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

My best,

Laurie Schnarr
