Fall Part-time Academic English Courses starting September 26

Speaking and writing skills are vital for success in university. They are essential for day-to-day communication with professors, fellow students, and UM staff. In the classroom, academic English skills are needed for writing essays and research papers, delivering presentations, participating in a class discussion or seminar, or working with others on a group project. The English Language Centre offers a range of Part-Time Academic English Courses. These non-credit courses help multilingual students develop all these skills, and more.
If English isn’t your first language, Part-Time Academic English Courses (PTAEC) are available year-round to help you develop your English skills and adjust to using English at a Canadian research-intensive university.
Our non-credit courses target practical skills that you can apply immediately in your academic studies and life: using “small talk” (informal speaking) with new classmates, gaining insight into common university classroom expectations, strategies for cross-cultural communication, learning common idioms and academic vocabulary, or improving your writing.
A new 10-hour course, Paraphrasing and Summarizing Skills, targets these critical reading and writing skills needed for academic study and producing strong written assignments. This course provides proven strategies for composing effective paraphrases and summaries.
Our supportive and knowledgeable language instructors have assisted many students in their journey to mastering spoken and written academic English. Past students express their appreciation for how PTAEC courses boosted their confidence and supported them in being successful in their undergraduate and graduate programs.
