Setting Precedents: Three law students receive 2022 Emerging Leader Awards

June 24, 2022 — 
No less than three law students have been named recipients of the University of Manitoba’s 2022 Emerging Leader Awards. These remarkable students include Class of 2022’s Michael Badejo, President of the Manitoba Law Students’ Association (2021-2022), Shawn Singh, an active member of the MLSA and participant in the Presidents’ Student Leadership Program cohort (2021), and Class of 2023’s Adam Kowal, who served as co-president of the Manitoba Indigenous Law Students’ Association during his second year of law.

Second cohort of Master of Human Rights program graduates

The Faculty of Law proudly congratulates the Master of Human Rights graduating class of 2022. Celebrating the conclusion of their program at a gala event at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights on June 10th, the twelve members of the third cohort of graduates from this unique interdisciplinary program said farewell to Robson Hall and set off to pursue careers in Human Rights advocacy. We asked a number of these incredible students to share their experiences taking this degree.

Law student-run Mini Moot mentors, encourages first-time competitors

April 1, 2022 — 
Coinciding with the regular moot competition season, the Manitoba Law Students Association Clinical Experience Committee once again hosted the annual Robson Hall Mini Moot on March 2 – 3, 2022, in-person at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. This year, 46 students participated. The winning team was Genevieve Smith and Jayden Wlasichuk, both first-year law students, with runner-up team of Ashley Slagerman and Paige Gratton.

Asper alum creates business out of non-alcoholic elixirs

“You’re my fourth Zoom meeting of the day,” laughs Leanne Kisil [BComm(Hons)/09] who recently moved from Winnipeg to Vancouver. “I’ve been here since August for a couple of reasons, including looking for a B.C. distributor, I am closer to some of the U.S. stores on the West Coast, and it’s where my partner lives.” Kisil is the owner and self-titled Chief Alchemy Officer of Solbrü, a company that creates non-alcoholic elixirs made of mushrooms, herbs, and other organic ingredients.

Roberta (Bobbie) Whiteman had already worked in the child welfare sector for at least 10 years when she first learned about the new Master of Human Rights (MHR) program being offered at the University of Manitoba. On October 18, she graduates as a member of the inaugural Master of Human Rights program class her thesis already demonstrating potential to impact the work she does in changing lives.
