Over forty undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Science are participating in the first (virtual) Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Science Undergraduate Student Competition, August 11th, & 12th, 2020. A new initiative, part of the Faculty of Science, Student Undergraduate Summer Research Experience Program. Three Minute Thesis challenges students to communicate their ideas and research discoveries concisely to a non-specialist audience, in three minutes or less. There will be two competitions that will air live on the Faculty of Science YouTube channel.

NRAO: Image release: Giant magnetic ropes in a galaxy’s halo

An astronomy composite image produced by professor Jayanne English, physics and astronomy, using radio data reveals an image of the “Whale Galaxy” (NGC 4631), made with the National Science Foundation’s Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), reveals hair-like filaments of the galaxy’s magnetic field protruding above and below the galaxy’s disk.

Professors Dr. Juliette Mammei, along with her colleagues Dr. Michael Gericke and adjunct professor Dr. Russell Mammei, currently have an experiment running at Jefferson Lab, the world’s premier electron scattering facility, to measure the neutron skin of lead in an “earth-based” experiment.
