Bioinformatics Lab – Q&A with Olivier Tremblay-Savard

A professor in the department of computer science, Bioinformatics Lab at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Tremblay-Savard’s research interests include comparative genomics, and human computing games in genomics. His interest in science goes way back and he credits the terrific science teachers he had in high school/ CEGEP and scientific tv shows for inspiring him. Dr. Tremblay-Savard received a BSc and a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the University of Montreal. He completed a postdoc, in Human Computing and Bioinformatics from McGill University.

Physicists suggest Neutron stars should be bigger than they are

UM physicists Drs. Juliette Mammei and Micheal Gerricke are part of an international research experiment that has made the most precise measurement yet of the neutron distribution in a heavy nucleus, with implications for the structure of neutron stars. Their paper, Accurate Determination of the Neutron Skin Thickness of 208Pb through Parity-Violation in Electron Scattering has just been published in the Physical Review Letters.

UM researchers develop handheld test for chronic kidney disease
April 16, 2021 —
Researchers at the University of Manitoba have developed a credit card-sized device to test for chronic kidney disease so compact and inexpensive that patients will be able to take the test at home. Test results would be available in just five minutes from a handheld device, called the Microfluidic Albumin Testing Lab on Chip (MATLOC).

UM mathematicians at the forefront of infectious disease modelling

UM researchers: Drs. Julien Arino, Stéphanie Portet, and Kang-Ling Liao, (mathematics) are part of a $10 million-dollar investment in Emerging Infectious Diseases Modeling established between the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The funding supports five multidisciplinary infectious disease modelling networks, that will significantly improve the coordination of infectious disease modelling to help Canada better respond to future public health threats.

Ph.D. student Daniel Rea wins Bill Buxton Dissertation Award

Daniel Rea received the Award for the 2020 doctoral dissertation, “Now You’re Teleoperating with Power: learning from video games to improve teleoperation interfaces,” completed under the supervision of Dr. Jim Young in the UM Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCI).
