Celebrating 20 years of the Manitoba Court of Appeal clerkship program
June 10, 2024 —
Twenty years ago, a young professor at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law approached the Dean with an idea: to ask the Manitoba Court of Appeal to take on third year law students as clerks to gain hands-on experience in seeing how the Province’s top court operates. As the 20th fall term of the program approaches, the Faculty and the Court realized the impact of the program’s long-lasting legacy and summoned alumni of the program from far and wide to celebrate at a luncheon held on May 10th, 2024.

This year’s STRR reception was held on May 2 with Seth Lozinski (they/them) selected as the Faculty of Law’s Outstanding Student. In turn, Lozinski chose their high school French teacher Ingrid Moehlmann and Assistant Professor Brandon Trask from the Faculty of Law as teachers who had the biggest impact on their education.

Justice in the Age of Agnosis examines sources of oppression and the role of ignorance

A new book edited by the UM Faculty of Law's dean, Dr. Richard Jochelson, with University of Regina Department of Justice colleague Dr. James Gacek, examines sources of oppression and the role of ignorance and where it might stem from. The book titled Justice in the Age of Agnosis: Socio-Legal Explorations of Denial, Deception, and Doubt, was published by Springer as part of the Palgrave Socio-Legal Studies book series, and includes chapters written by five other legal scholars affiliated with the Robson Hall-based law faculty.

Inuit Legal Clinic Summit at Robson Hall

The Faculty of Law and Perrie Law, with funding from the Manitoba Law Foundation, hosted a gathering of stakeholders on May 1 - 2 attending an Inuit Legal Clinic Summit. The purpose of the summit was to listen to community experiences with cross-jurisdictional legal issues and to determine the viability of an Inuit Legal Clinic in Winnipeg.
