Pitblado Lectures: Dedicated to furthering legal education in Manitoba

Since 1960, the Manitoba legal profession has had the benefit of the annual Isaac Pitblado Lectures, established in honour of the late distinguished Manitoba lawyer, Isaac Pitblado. This remarkable man actively practiced law for 74 years. This year's lectures proved to be a testament to the strong relationship between the Manitoba Bar Association (MBA), the Law Society, and Manitoba's Law School.

Talented, dedicated faculty members earn 2017 Merit Awards

Three professors at Robson Hall Faculty of Law have received prestigious recognition for their work after being named winners of the 2017 UM/UMFA Merit Awards. In the Humanities and Social Sciences section, Dr. Bruce Curran and Dr. Virginia Torrie received Merit Awards in the category of Teaching. Dr. Donn Short won a Merit Award in the combined category of Research, Teaching & Service. This is Dr. Short’s fourth university award.

Law Students willingly work overtime to present at Accessing Justice

A total of nine students and three professors from the University of Manitoba’s Robson Hall Faculty of Law will take part in the annual conference on Accessing Justice: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Access, Justice, Law and Order hosted at the University of Winnipeg by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Justice Studies (CIJS), May 9 – 11, 2018. This is the most number of representatives from Robson Hall taking part in the conference’s eight-year history.

Taking Care of Hearts and Minds

The study of Law is an intellectually challenging and life-consuming endeavour, but mental health is not something lawyers have traditionally been willing to discuss openly. An in-depth CBC report from 2016 examined research that found lawyers are at higher risk of mental health issues and addictions than the general populace. In the fall of 2017, Ontario law schools started initiatives to address law students’ stress and anxiety.

Law Students and Faculty share hidden talents for a good cause

Each year, the Manitoba Law Student’s Association (MLSA) Social Committee organizes a fun “Coffee House” and invites Law Students and Faculty to come show off their talents. Donations are collected at the door and proceeds go to a charity determined by the MLSA’s Community Outreach Committee. This year, held on March 4th, the Coffee House raised approximately $300.00 for the Elizabeth Fry Society.
