Muscle protein uncovers evolutionary origins of diving in the world’s smallest mammals

UM Biologist Kevin Campbell and colleagues on an international research team studied the DNA of these mammals and using genetic sequencing methods, mapped the evolution of a single protein, called myoglobin, that stores oxygen in muscles.

Dr. Gerstein is one of 19 successful applicants out of a total of 300 who applied to the early career research program, which recognizes exceptional research from across the globe.

Meet Ariel Gordon, Writer-in Residence in the Buller Greenhouse

When Ariel Gordon says she’s the new Writer-in-Residence (WIR) in the Buller Greenhouse, she’s not kidding. In fact, Gordon is the first-ever WIR in the greenhouse, based on her proposal to its staff and the Department of Biological Sciences after receiving a Self-Directed Residency grant from the Manitoba Arts Council.
