Thesis Bootcamp for Graduate Students

Prepare a thesis roadmap and apply by May 19

April 18, 2023 —

The Academic Learning Centre, in partnership with the Faculty of Graduate Studies, is hosting an intensive 3-day writing retreat designed to help graduate students progress in writing their thesis.  The workshop is based on the Australian National University Thesis Bootcamp

The Bootcamp is May 23, 24, and 25 (Tuesday – Thursday). It starts at 8:30 am and runs until 5:00 pm daily on the Fort Garry campus.  It is NOT virtual and attendees must commit to attending all three days. The intent is to write as much as possible, and students must develop a writing plan How to Prepare a Thesis – Roadmap and submit it by May 19. Students who don’t submit the plan cannot attend the retreat. With this in mind, we encourage students to discuss their writing plans with their advisors before attending.

The aim for students in this writing bootcamp is to write 20,000 words (!). We know this is a stretch goal and that not everyone will meet this goal, but aiming big encourages commitment and focus. To help students reach this goal, we ask all participants to submit their thesis “roadmap” before the retreat.

Each day starts with a short workshop on writing strategies, including some strategies for writing faster and strategies for dealing with procrastination and establishing a consistent writing routine. We provide quiet space, writing tutor support (as needed), beverages and snacks each day, and lunch for one of the days.
