Manitoba Education Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes U of M Alumni

Congratulations to the Faculty of Education Alumni who will be recognized for their outstanding achievements at the Celebration of Excellence in Teaching Awards. The Manitoba Education Excellence in Teaching Awards will be awarded on Tuesday, April 17th, 2010 at the Legislative Building in Winnipeg as part of national Education Week, a week-long tribute to the teaching profession.

Education Minister Nancy Allan explains that, “The recipients of these awards are exemplary professionals who are passionate about learning and inspire the best in students and the teams they work with. These awards recognize their creative, innovative and effective teaching practices and achievements as educators.”

Six awards of excellence will be awarded in four categories. Four of the awards will be handed to the following University of Manitoba, Faculty of Education Alumni and one award will be given to a current Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education (PBDE) student.

University of Manitoba Alumni Recipients:

The award for Teaching Excellence in the Middle Years will be given to Barbara Hamilton (B.Ed. May ‘08). Currently Barbara is a teacher at École Seven Oaks Middle School, Seven Oaks School Division.

The award for Teaching Excellence in the Senior Years will be awarded to Steven Deighton (B.PE. ’99, B.Ed. May ‘01). Steven is a teacher at Joseph H. Kerr School in Snow Lake, and part of the Frontier School Division.

Recent Faculty of Education Alumna, Rosanne Massinon (B.Sc. ’07, B. Ed. May ‘09) will receive the Outstanding New Teacher award. Rosanne is a teacher at Carman Collegiate in the Prairie Rose School Division.

Current PBDE student, Adrian Deakin will receive the Team Collaboration award with her colleagues April McKnight and Robert Striemer of Shaftesbury High School in the Pembina Trails School Division.

The Outstanding School Leader award will be delivered to Gordon Campbell (B. Ed. May ‘83) who is an educator in at École Saint-Avila in the Pembina Trails School Division.

Non-University of Manitoba Alumni Recipient:
Also, congratulations to Sharen McDermit on receiving the Teaching Excellence award for Early Years education. Sharen is an educator at David Livingstone School in the Winnipeg School Division.

Each recipient will receive a certificate of recognition and a $500 cash award at the luncheon ceremony. The recipients’ schools will also receive $500 each for projects or equipment.
