Faculty to host ‘education for reconciliation’ conference
Practice-focused workshops an opportunity for teaching students, instructors and faculty advisors
The Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba, in partnership with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, will host a two-part conference focusing on education for truth and reconciliation on Sept. 26, 2016 and Feb. 6, 2017 at the University of Manitoba.
Part One of this conference (Sept. 26), is an opportunity for UM teacher candidates, their cooperating teachers and faculty advisors, to gather at the UM and to participate in practice-focused workshops. The purpose is to provide participants with information about the TRC findings and to experience how the Calls to Action are being enacted by Manitoba teachers.
The workshops will be hosted by educators from across the province who will share the various actions being taken in regards to reconciliation. The workshops will represent interdisciplinary approaches; convey various First Nations, Metis and Inuit perspectives; be specific to streams (early, middle or senior) and will include cross stream activities; and highlight cross-sector (e.g. education and justice) work being done in the field.
The day will end with participants making a commitment to take up the Calls to Action: ReconciliACTIONs. This will create opportunities for teacher candidates and their cooperating teachers to work collaboratively to enact Calls to Action in their respective schools. These school teams will build momentum and capacity in their schools to enlist practices focused on reconciliation.
At the second gathering (Feb. 6), we will invite these same school teams back together (this time, including some of their students) to celebrate and showcase the work engaged in at their respective schools. The details and logistics of the part two will be provided in the fall.
Important Information:
- Space is limited. All of the UM Faculty of Education teacher candidates (about 400) will be required to attend and priority will be given to their respective cooperating teachers (about 400 teachers) or their designates.
- There will be NO COST to attend this event. Registration will take place in early September.
- The conference structure will include a keynote, a choice of 2 learning activities (from about 40 workshop choices), teacher-specific Resource Kiosks, and a closing of calls to action
The teachers who will be providing workshops will be drawn from across the province and the cooperating teachers who are eligible to attend as participants are in about 20 school divisions in the province.
