Welcome to Summer Term 2024

Message from Laurie M. Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students)

May 14, 2024 —

Whether you’re a new student joining us for the first time, or a continuing student looking to get ahead in your degree, we’re glad you’re here and we’re looking forward to seeing you around our campuses this summer! Here is some valuable information to help you navigate the term successfully.

Supports

Throughout the summer term offices remain open and a range of resources are available to support all students personally and academically. The Student Supports webpage features many, including those focused on health and wellness, academic success, and supports for everyday life. Included are specific resources for Indigenous students, international students, new students, graduate students, and military members and dependents. I encourage you to check these out.

Career development and job search

Career Services supports UM students and recent alumni with career planning and job search. If you are looking for summer employment, you can search for jobs on UMConnect and get your resumé reviewed at the Resumé Learning Centre. If want to explore your options or develop a parallel plan for your educational or career goals, meeting with a Career Consultant is a great first step. Contact Career Services (204-474-9456 or cs.receptionist@umanitoba.ca) to make an appointment.

Global student experience

See the world while earning credits toward your degree through the UM Student Exchange program! We have partnerships with 50 international institutions in over 20 destinations. UM students pay regular tuition to the University of Manitoba while studying abroad, and usually receive full credits for courses taken at partner universities. Applications for Winter 2025 and Summer 2025 exchanges close May 15, 2024. Visit the International Centre’s exchange webpage to learn more about the application process and important timelines.

Weekly Wednesday Conversation Group for International Students

The International Centre is hosting a weekly conversation group for international students during the summer and all students are welcome. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Canadian culture and how to adapt to life in Manitoba, get tips for making connections on campus, and practice your Canadian “small talk”. The sessions are every Wednesday from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Meet at the International Centre, Room 541 UMSU University Centre, and explore campus with new meeting locations every week.

Stay active with Rec Services

Don’t put your health and wellness on hold this summer! Even if you’re not taking courses, you can still access the UM Sport and Recreation facilities during the Summer Term. Visit the Recreation Services webpage for more information.

Campus beautification day

The annual University of Manitoba Campus Beautification Day festivities take place May 23, 28 and June 6 at Bannatyne campus, Fort Garry campus, and William Norrie, respectively. Students are welcome to participate! Campus Beautification Day offers opportunities for our campus community to gather for gardening activities, music, and free lunch. Gardening begins at 9:00 a.m. and goes until noon for all three locations, followed by a barbeque. The entire university community is invited to join in the planting while connecting and getting some fresh air. Read this UM Today story for details on how to register. See you there!

Convocation

Celebrate the success of your fellow students. Spring convocation is happening on the Bannatyne Campus on May 16, at the Fort Garry Campus from June 4-7, and at Université de Saint-Boniface on June 10. For a comprehensive list of ceremony dates and times be sure to visit the convocation webpage. Congratulations to all UM graduates!

Encampment on the Fort Garry campus

UM is aware of an encampment planned for May 7-9 on the Fort Garry campus. For updated information, please refer to the email you received earlier today from the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), Diane Hiebert-Murphy.

I will be in touch again as Summer Term progresses. Meanwhile, be sure to check your UM email regularly, read the Student Weekly e-newsletter, and follow UM social media channels like @umstudent, @umfirstyearcentre, and @um.international.

With warm wishes to you for personal and academic success this term.

All my best…

…Laurie
