UM supports available throughout the exam period

Message from Laurie M. Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students) – Dec. 11, 2023

December 11, 2023 —

As I mentioned in my message on Friday night, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 (ATU), the designated representative for transit workers in the City of Winnipeg, has accepted their offer and Winnipeg Transit service is continuing with regular schedules and operations. I know this is a welcome relief for so many of you who rely on transit to travel to and from our campuses.

As we enter the upcoming exam period from December 12 to 22, I extend my best wishes to each of you. To support you during this time, I would like to share valuable information and resources that can help you in navigating the next two weeks.

Exam Preparation

Recognizing the additional pressure you may be feeling as you prepare for exams, I want to emphasize the importance of your wellbeing. Prioritize self-care, develop strategies for relief, and don’t hesitate to seek support to ensure your success.

If you’re looking for study space, remember that the Libraries are open and hours are posted on their website. And keep in mind that Academic Advisors are available to assist you throughout the exam period until the university closes on December 22.

Self-care

While studying is crucial, taking care of yourself is equally important. The team at HealthyU offers tips on balancing both effectively. Take advantage of the new Student Wellness Centre at 162 Extended Education Complex for peer support, a tranquil space, and a wellness resource library. Check their website for updated hours and additional information during the exam period.

Campus Services

Whether you want to grab a hot coffee or tea, eat a meal, or grab a snack during the exam period UM Campus Services are continuing to operate on our campuses. Be sure to visit the individual food outlet’s webpage to confirm hours of operation on weekends. Tim Horton’s in the Price Faculty of Engineering Atrium will be open until 6:00 pm throughout the exam period.

Stay active

Staying active promotes a variety of health benefits, mental wellbeing, and can help relieve stress and anxiety. Through the Sport and Rec fee, UM students have access to sport and recreation facilities, casual rec use and group fitness classes at the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses. Visit UM Recreation Services to learn more and book a tour of the sport and recreation facilities. Learn about hours of operation through winter break and come in for a visit.

I wish you all the very best with your final exams and assignments. You’ve got this, Bisons!

…Laurie
