She isn’t thinking about the hours of practice and case preparation; she isn’t worried about being “too much” (a holdover from a lifetime of being a big talker); she isn’t fixated on the ideas that didn’t make the cut; and she isn’t second-guessing her delivery. No, as Francis puts it, when she is presenting, everything else goes away.

As a professional association representing the interests of Manitoba criminal defence lawyers, CDLAM brings together lawyers, law students and other justice system participants to reflect on the last year in criminal law, explore emerging issues, and call attention to the unique professional challenges of criminal defence lawyering.

Applied research can be independent, student lead research supported with faculty guidance, such as a thesis project, or it can be in collaboration with community partners and faculty researchers. In this experiential learning opportunity, students can conduct their own academic research. A project-based experience is an application of critical analysis and knowledge in your discipline to demonstrate learning or to address a problem.

International Human Rights Clinic student participates in United Nations sessions in Geneva

This fall, after a successful funding application authored by Professors Kjell Anderson and Nathan Derejko, the inaugural International Human Rights Clinic (IHRC) at Robson Hall was launched under the leadership of Clinical Counsel, Allison Fenske. The clinic marks a significant step in providing students in the Faculty of Law’s Juris Doctor, Master of Laws and Master of Human Rights degree programs with experiential learning opportunities that blend human rights law with clinical practice.

Law students support Manitoba’s creative sector

On October 24-27, 2024, law students from the Manitoba Legal Clinic for the Arts participated in the Manitoba Arts Network Showcase in Brandon, Manitoba, which celebrated 40 years of connecting artists and communities in rural and Northern Manitoba. This annual event welcomed over 150 artists, presenters, and industry supporters together for four days of education, networking, and celebration.

On October 7 and 8, 2024, 10 law students from the Faculty of Law’ s L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic attended the Canadian Technology Law Association’s (“CAN-TECH”) 2024 Fall Technology Conference in Toronto, Ontario. This was an incredible opportunity for law students to not only learn about the latest developments in technology and law, but to also engage with leading professionals in this space.
