Circus arts a ‘growing area’ for physical literacy research

A postdoctoral fellow at the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, recently completed training at the world-renowned National Circus School in Montreal as part of a circus arts instructor program, which is related to her physical literacy research.

At the start of his four-decade career in physical therapy and neuroscience research, Tony Szturm [PhD/88] looked to his past for inspiration. Szturm has been legally blind since the age of 10 from a rare eye disease that is usually caused by age-related deterioration. From a young age he was exposed to assistive technologies, such as video magnification systems and computer-based voice software.

When David Ambrose [BMROT/00] was 10 years old, growing up in Teulon, Man., the first seeds of his career were planted while he watched the Calgary Flames make a run for the Stanley Cup in 1989. It wasn’t hockey legends like Lanny McDonald who caught his attention. Instead, he noticed Bearcat Murray, the team’s athletic trainer, tending to injured players on the ice.

People with disabilities often avoid going to hospital or doctors’ offices because those areas are not equipped to address “non-conformist” bodies and minds, said Nancy Hansen, director of UM’s interdisciplinary master’s program in disability studies, at a recent panel discussion on ableism in health care.
