Professor Brenda Gunn: Robson Hall’s resident expert on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

March 23, 2018 — 
Associate Professor Brenda Gunn recently appeared before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs to give testimony for a study the committee is conducting on Bill C-262 which would implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The Ninth Annual DeLloyd J. Guth Visiting Lecture on Legal History

March 23, 2018 — 
Speaking at the ninth annual DeLloyd J. Guth Visiting Lecture on Legal History, Hamar Foster, Q.C., compared evidence found in RCMP reports with Canadian artist Emily Carr’s eye-witness account of her experience spending time in Indigenous communities in her book, Klee Wyck (1941), a memoir of her travels in BC.

A lesson in fixing a flawed system

March 22, 2018 — 
The Criminal Law Group of Robson Hall’s Manitoba Law Students Association hosted author, lawyer and child sexual abuse survivor on March 13, 2018 at the Faculty of Law. Gilhooly was speaking out about criminal justice reform for victims of sexual assault and sharing his story of surviving abuse at the hands of Graham James, the infamous junior hockey coach who has been convicted of abusing former NHL stars.

Best in the West, Robson Hall team claims 2nd place and Best Closing Argument at Sopinka Cup

March 21, 2018 — 
As coaches, we are extremely proud of our team, Yassir Al-Naji and Ben Johnson, who placed second in the Sopinka Cup Moot Trial Competition held in Ottawa March 16-17, 2018.  In addition, Yassir’s powerful closing submissions - in a Crown case that had almost no merit - earned him the prize for best closing address!

Law Students and Faculty share hidden talents for a good cause

March 15, 2018 — 
Each year, the Manitoba Law Student’s Association (MLSA) Social Committee organizes a fun “Coffee House” and invites Law Students and Faculty to come show off their talents. Donations are collected at the door and proceeds go to a charity determined by the MLSA’s Community Outreach Committee. This year, held on March 4th, the Coffee House raised approximately $300.00 for the Elizabeth Fry Society.

Jean Teillet found family documents revealed startling information about Métis law and governance, while researching her forthcoming popular history of the Métis people.

Robson Hall Teams Shine at Second Annual Canadian National Negotiation Competition

March 9, 2018 — 
Over March 2nd and 3rd, two Robson Hall teams put in extremely strong performances at the second annual Canadian National Negotiation Competition (CNNC).  Against an talented field of the best law student negotiators from across Canada, the team of Kaitlan Buchko and Tanci Smart-Carvalho placed second, and the pair of Erin Evans and Alex Favreau placed sixth.  Steven Meltzer, a lawyer with Pullan Kammerloch Frohlinger Lawyers, and I travelled with the teams to the University of Saskatchewan, to act as their coaches there.  We witnessed first-hand the stellar jobs they did.

The Manitoba Bar Association’s Legal Research section recently co-hosted a panel discussion with Robson Hall Faculty of Law’s Career Development Office to inform students of the value of undertaking a Master of Laws degree. Wuraola (Wura) Dasylva [LL.M./’17] would have been a poster child for this event if she weren’t busy working as an Articling Student at the law firm of Miller Thomson in Regina, SK.
