The Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) is delighted to once again offer an opportunity to honour and celebrate the members of the Indigenous campus community at UM that are working each day to make a difference at this university. In its eighth year, the Honouring our Indigenous Campus Community recognition ceremony is a celebration of the outstanding achievements and contributions of Indigenous students, faculty and support staff across UM campuses.

An opportunity to hear teachings and learn from Indigenous Elders and traditional Knowledge Keepers is coming to the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus. The 18th Annual Elders and Traditional Peoples Gathering, taking place January 25 and 26, is a time to embrace traditional Indigenous teachings shared through ceremony and across generations. This year’s theme is Restoring our Spirits: Wellness through Stories.

January 4, 2024, marks the second annual National Ribbon Skirt Day in Canada – a day to learn more about and to celebrate Indigenous culture, traditions, histories and contributions. While this national day has only recently been established, ribbon skirts are a centuries-old symbol of identity, adaptation and survival for Indigenous women, girls and gender-diverse people.

Celebrating Dr. Catherine Cook

After more than 30 years with the University of Manitoba, inaugural Vice-President (Indigenous) Dr. Catherine Cook will retire at the end of January. Throughout her career, Cook has worked with First Nations, Métis, Inuit, provincial and federal governments, as well as community organizations, to champion the importance of health services for Indigenous Manitobans.

More than 2,000 Indigenous youth in Manitoba have already benefited from the University of Manitoba’s innovative partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. Just over two years ago, the $16.1 million partnership set out to transform Indigenous education through initiatives co-created with Indigenous students, communities, governments and organizations, as well as post-secondary institutions across the province.
