Men’s bronze medal swimmer is Male Athlete of the Week

March 5, 2014 —

Just days after he won bronze at the 2014 CIS Swimming Championships, men’s swimming student-athlete Dillon Perron was named the Smitty’s Bison Sports Male Athlete of the Week (Week ending Feb. 24). Women’s volleyball student-athlete Rachel Cockrell was named the Smitty’s Bison Sports Female Athlete of the Week after the Women’s Volleyball team took home the national championship last weekend.

At the conclusion of the 2014 CIS Swimming Championships at the University of Toronto from February 20 to 22, the Manitoba Bisons swim teams had one swimmer make the podium as third year men’s swimmer and captain Dillon Perron won a bronze medal, had four Top 8 finishes and set three new provincial records during the three day national event.

Perron won his first ever CIS medal when he finished third in the men’s 100m breaststroke on day one. He established a new provincial mark twice in that discipline as he was first in the preliminaries in a new time of 1:00.83 and then bested that mark with a third place podium finish in another new provincial record of 1:00.58 (old record: 1:01.32 set by Perron on Nov. 24/12).

This was the first Manitoba Bisons medal performance at a CIS Championship since 2006 when Landice Yestrau was third in the 50m breaststroke.

The Lac du Bonnet, MB native continued his strong Championship as he set two more provincial records on day two. He was fourth in the men’s 200m breaststroke while establishing another new provincial record of 2:12.76 and only .02 off of a bronze medal in the race. In addition, he was eighth place in the men’s 50m butterfly (24.28) – also setting a new provincial record (old record: 24.67 by Perron on Nov. 29/12).

Perron completed his fantastic Championship, as he was fifth in the men’s 50m breaststroke in a time of 28.31. In team standings, the Bison men’s team ended up in 15th spot with 62 points (an improvement of 25 points from last season’s CIS Nationals).

This was the second time Perron has been named Smitty’s Bison Sports Male Athlete of the Week for the 2013-14 season (Jan. 26/14).
