Heidi Marx appointed UM’s new Dean of Arts
The University of Manitoba is pleased to announce that Dr. Heidi Marx has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Arts, effective July 1, 2024.
Dr. Marx has held various Associate Dean positions in the Faculty of Arts since 2016, most recently serving as Associate Dean (Graduate Studies, Curriculum, and Internationalization.) In each of these senior leadership roles, she led the coordination and implementation of a variety of initiatives supporting research, encouraging innovative teaching practices, and promoting more equitable and inclusive cultures across campus.
“I am confident that Dr. Marx’s collaborative and collegial leadership style together with her commitment to advancing EDI, research, and Indigenous engagement and achievement will serve the Faculty of Arts and the University of Manitoba well into the future,” says Dr. Diane Hiebert-Murphy, Provost and Vice-President (Academic).
Dr. Marx holds doctoral degrees in philosophy from Pennsylvania State University (1999) and in history from the University of California at Santa Barbara (2009). She received her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Calgary (1993). Marx has taught undergraduate and graduate courses, supervised graduate students, and served on graduate student committees. While serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Marx will retain her position as tenured professor in the department of Religion.
A renowned researcher in the philosophy and medicine of Late Antiquity, Marx is the author of three books and multiple articles. Her most recent co-authored volume is a sourcebook on medicine of the ancient mediterranean world (500 BCE – 600 CE). She is also the co-founder and co-director of ReMeDHe, a working group with over 300 members worldwide, which explores the intersections between religion, medicine, disability, health and healing in late antiquity.
Throughout her career, Marx has demonstrated a deep commitment to increasing equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI) and social justice. She has served on various EDI committees at UM and was the dean’s office lead for the introduction of the Indigenous content requirement in the Faculty of Arts. Through the ReMeDHe group, she has worked on initiatives that expand access for Black, Indigenous and other People of Colour (BIPOC) scholars and scholars with disabilities.
“The Faculty of Arts has been my academic home for 15 years now, and I have so many cherished connections with colleagues, staff, and students (present and former),” says Dr. Heidi Marx. “It is an honor to be able to continue to serve these people in my new role, and I look forward to working with them to ensure that Arts is a place where people and ideas can flourish.”
