Migration, Settlement and Integration Conference a Success

November 5, 2018 — 
The 11th annual Strangers in New Homelands International Conference on Migration, Settlement and Integration was held from Wednesday, October 31st to Friday November 2nd, 2018 at the Canad Inns Polo Park Destination Center in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The conference, hosted by the faculty of social work, was attended by presenters and participants from around the world.

The Inner City Social Work Program (ICSWP) would like to thank the family of Margaret Tobin for gifting some of her artifacts, in honour of Kim Clare, to the William Norrie Centre for display. Margaret Tobin was an Associate Professor and Counsellor at the University of Manitoba who was committed to the ideals of the ICSWP, with heavy focus on supporting single parents, First Nations peoples, and accessibility services for students.

New book explores how expressive arts have the power to effect social change

How can social workers integrate expressive arts methods as a complement to their work to better support individual, group, and community growth?  Expressive Arts for Social Work and Social Change explores the values and benefits of expressive arts (i.e. visual arts, movement and dance, expressive forms of writing and narrative, music, and performance) and the role they can play in social work practice and inquiry.

U of M hosts international conference focused on improving outcomes for vulnerable migrant populations in Canada and beyond

June 12, 2018 — 
Multicultural receiving countries, such as Canada, usually assist in the integration of immigrants and refugees by removing most barriers to their participation in their new homeland, often leading to positive outcomes and a stronger sense of belonging in the long run. However, some migrants face additional challenges shaped by systemic inequities, particularly with regard to their lack of access to resources and decision-making processes that inevitably have a negative impact on their lives. As a result, this population is more vulnerable to poor educational, health, and social processes.
